Jump Roping at its BEST!!! (Simple way to improve daily)

Monday, April 12th, 2010

For those of you who train with me know that I am big on Jump Roping on a daily basis.  I believe it is a simple and “cheap” (jump rope costs from $1 – $10) way to improve foot quickness, conditioning and muscle endurance!!!  In this video above Floyd Mayweather Jr. (pound for pound the best boxer in the world) displays impeccable footwork, speed, quickness and control over the jump rope!  I believe that this is a big reason why his hands and feet are so quick as a boxer!!!  So………….I want to ask you to challenge yourself to match his (Floyd Mayweather Jr’s) intensity, focus and control with your own jump rope and workout!!!  In due time, you will begin to reap the benefits of what consistent jump roping can do for you in your own basketball game!

Good Ol Fashioned “Mikan Drill”

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Here is the “Mikan Drill”, named after George Mikan (NBA great who played for the Minneapolis Lakers).  This  is a GREAT drill that helps you to improve on your footwork and ability to finish lay-ups with both your right and left hand.  You will learn to use the correct footwork on a left hand lay-up as well as a right hand lay-up.  This is a drill that we at Hoop Dreams use for our youngest players all the way up to our pro’s!

“When you are resting, someone else is working….”

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I can remember when I was younger, a coach once told me:  “When you are resting at home, someone else is working and when you meet up with them, they will beat you because they are more prepared!”

That is something that stuck with me, regarding an under-used “skill” – WORK ETHIC!!!

Too many players these days try to get away without working on their games or playing basketball on a daily basis.  Some say it is because of twitter, facebook, xbox 360, PS3, Internet, Instant messaging, Cell phones, texting, etc.  That kids are busy using these advancements in technology rather than outside or in a gym playing and working on their games!

In my experience, all of the players that I have worked with and have been successful in the game of basketball are those who put in the work daily.  If players put in just an hour a day, consistently (7 days a week), they would see enormous gains in their individual games.   In the words of a good friend of mine…”TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN!!!”

DON’T WASTE ANYMORE TIME, PUT IN THE WORK DAILY, WORK HARDER THAN THE NEXT MAN!!!  Be that player who is always working while OTHERS are resting!!!
